Information about the Museu d'Història de la Ciutat

At the new place of the palace remainings of the largest Roman settlement ever discovered in Europe were found: Barcino, as Barcelona was called in Roman times. The museum is located in the middle of the Barri Gòtic near the cathedral.

In the modern entrance to the Museu d'Història de la Ciutat, you can see some ancient ceramics and other objects which were found in the excavations. With the elevator ride to the basement you take a journey of 2,000 years back to the time of the Romans. Here you will find the remainings of a well-maintained and by drawings vividly supplemented Roman settlement: Barcino. First, you enter an ancient laundry and dying, in which you can learn something about the daily life at that time. You can see the process of making wine in the 3rd century, a Roman church of the 6th century and the episcopal complex of the 7th century.

The underground part leads to the cathedral in the ancient settlement of Barcelona.

On the first floor, you can see the further course of city history, you also get an impressive insight into the appearance of the historic Barcelona.

The admission ticket is valid for the museum, palace chapel, Torre del Rei and the excavations. You get free admission to the Museu d'Història de la Cuitat with the Barcelona Card.

Why the Museu d'Història de la Ciutat is worth visiting

In the Gothic District, you will often find remnants of buildings from Roman times, such as parts of the viaduct or the Roman city wall. At the beginning of the museum tour you will drive down to the excavations of Barcino, the Roman city of Barcelona. Here you can see the rigging of a huge Roman settlement, with dwellings, craft shops, laundries and other buildings. These excavations are very impressive.
